It’s already been quite an exciting month in the world of video games, and if Sonic and Pokémon weren’t already enough, Square Enix today also released Tactics Ogre: Reborn, based on the classic series of the same name.
We’ve had some positive first impressions already and now have a review roundup covering all versions of the game. Our own Nintendo Life review will also be available in the near future. So keep an eye on that!
Our sister site Push Square, which focuses on all things PlayStation, gave the game eight out of ten stars:
“The strategy RPG genre owes much to the Tactics Ogre franchise, which is filled with lesser titles trying to recreate even a fraction of its winning formula. The experience that is at the heart of Tactics Ogre: Reborn has admirably withstood the test of time. and, thanks to the panoply of smart tweaks and quality of life improvements introduced, will likely remain ahead of the pack for years to come.”
Another of our VG247 friends said that this new version was “even better”, giving it a rating of 5/5:
“In a world where we’ve seen Square Enix crumble with remasters (e.g. lackluster Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters and blatant Kingdom Hearts on Switch), Tactics Ogre: Reborn shines a light on something special – a game changer. keeps, so to speak, that bodes remarkably well for the rest of the publisher’s classic RPG work.”
Mako Reactor gave the game an outstanding 9.5 out of 10 star rating, also noting how good the system felt on some other handheld platforms (we’re sure this will translate well to the Switch then):
“Tactics Ogre: Reborn on PC is a staple for fans of tactical RPGs with its deep gameplay, tons of customization, outstanding soundtrack, and incredible Steam Deck feel. It took Square Enix a long time to bring Tactics Ogre back, and I’m glad we have such a great version.”
Our friends at Eurogamer called it a “tremendous revival” and praised the latest release:
“Even if you don’t play this version, it’s a game you should definitely play.”
And the folks at RPGFan were equally thrilled – awarding the title 9.5/10:
“Ogre Tactic: Reborn is a huge success in its aims to modernize an admittedly old game…it’s a pleasant surprise to see Square Enix paying so much delicate attention to every facet. Think of it like an old house. It needed to be dusted off; it has period elements that require a specific stain to avoid rotting. Square Enix gave this house a thorough makeover, using the right tools for every job and restoring it to the shine you remember when you were younger. In the context of this game, it’s a big win, but it also makes me wish they’d put as much effort into other recent remasters.”
Will you be adding this game to your own Switch collection? Tell us in the comments.
