Earlier this week, Nintendo’s latest financial report revealed that Switch Online subscriptions have now “surpassed” 36 million paid subscriptions – with an increase of around four million subscriptions from the previous year.
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa was also asked about the future of the service – explaining how Nintendo is “looking at various initiatives” as well as “other service content improvements” to keep players coming back for more. Here’s Nintendo’s full Q&A summary exchange:
What kind of initiatives do you plan to further increase the number of Nintendo Switch Online members and increase the enthusiasm of existing members?
Furukawa: “As of September 2022, the number of paying members of Nintendo Switch Online exceeded 36 million. Although some users choose not to renew their subscription once it has expired, the number of members is increasing overall, as well as the people playing Nintendo Switch and titles that support online play part thanks to the addition of Nintendo 64 titles.
“Nintendo Switch Online’s goal as a service is to help users enjoy Nintendo Switch for a long time, so we are considering various initiatives, including further service content improvements. As we have discussed in today’s presentation, our goal is to continue to use the Nintendo Account to foster lasting and positive relationships with our consumers. In line with this strategy, we view Nintendo Switch Online as our initiative to encourage our users to continue enjoying Nintendo Switch for many years to come.
While Nintendo revealed the total surge in Switch Online subscribers, it didn’t break down the exact number of expansion pack users. The Expansion Pack tier adds the Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis/Mega Drive library, along with add-on content for games.
The latest batch of N64 titles were announced in September – revealing titles such as Mario Party, Pilotwings 64, Pokémon Stadium and even the return of Rare’s legendary first-person shooter GoldenEye 007.
