This custom home is so much more than just four walls.
This one-of-a-kind home in Hamden, Connecticut was very remote when it was built in the 1960s, and it is even more so today.
For the first time in its history, this sloping and isolated four-bedroom is looking for a new owner.
After purchasing a secluded property on a wooded lot adjacent to Sleeping Giant State Park, the current owners commissioned their friend and famed Yale architect, David Sellers, to build them a two-story Colonial. Sellers then informed them that he could design “something better” and, in 1969, built them a futuristic, family-focused abode that they have lived in ever since.
“Fifty-three years of living in ‘something better than a two-story colonial’ by now-famous Dave lived in a truly meaningful sculpture and has been a never-ending delight,” the sellers said. Helen and Peter Knudsen of solitary confinement. housing, currently on the market for $629,000 with Wojtek Borowski of Pearce Real Estate.

The contemporary, Zillow Gone Wild-worthy spans 2,912 square feet and is set on 4.2 acres and features a clapboard and redwood-stained cedar exterior. There are also custom oversized windows, vaulted ceilings and drive-thru, to allow “weather-proof vehicle entry and storage.”
The ground floor is the most unique, with windows on both sides of the dining area to make dining feel like “an outdoor picnic”, two terraces – one outside the kitchen and one outside the living room – a family room and kitchen with brightly colored swivel bins. There is also a pantry, laundry room, vestibule, bathroom, three closets and two hallways.
The upstairs layout is a little more conventional, although the rooms all have steeply sloped ceilings. Here are the other two bathrooms – both with skylights – two more decks and the three children’s bedrooms, as well as the master suite.
“There are no curtains and only one blind in the family room,” note the owners. “The slanted window in the family room allows” the light reflected against the stone landscaping to enter.
