Exclusive: ‘Street Fighter’ is back with new theme song ‘Not On The Sidelines’

A few months before his 35th birthdaye birthday, the street fighter The series is back with its latest installment – and a theme song to go with it. “Not on the Sidelines” by Rocco808 and Randy Marx was produced by GRP to evoke the retro themes and vibe of the 1987 fighting game franchise. Directed by Ross Harris, the music video features the two rappers along with two guest specials: quadriplegic graffiti artist Benny Diar and dancer Sumi Oshima.

Developed by Capcom, the street fighter is considered a landmark franchise not only in the fighting game genre, but also in gaming history itself. Although the first entry in the series was launched in the late 80s, it was the second installment – Street Fighter II – which most casual gamers remember. Hitting the arcades in February 1991, it launched a fighting game revolution with multiple revisions and countless ports over the next three decades. It inspired a generation of gamers and developers, almost instantly becoming a touchstone.

Part of the game’s appeal has always been its diverse roster of fighters, which included brawlers from around the world, each representing their nation with unique fighting styles and designs evoking their culture – although some of the older designs haven’t aged very well. . Along with an ever-changing cultural sensitivity to racial stereotyping, the street fighter The series has remained dedicated to inclusivity. This theme is reflected in the new music video, which revolves around the theme of how individuals “all fight their own battles.”

As to why Capcom chose hip-hop for the theme song for its new game, Street Fighter 6 producer Shuhei Matsumoto said, “Whether this is the intro of street fighter, the characters quoted by famous rappers, or the art you see on the streets, we are aware that street fighter is a perfect match for street and hip-hop culture. And with Street Fighter 6we pushed it to the fore, and you can feel that flavor in the sounds of the game as well.”

Since the 2016 barebones release of Street Fighter V, the series fell somewhat out of favor with many gamers. But with new eSports-centric features, a hugely positive outcome social media response to the recent leak of the game’s alleged character roster, and even a “Fighting Ground” mode that brings feedback from Jeremy “Vicious Lopez” and Aru from the fighting game community, things are looking up for the iconic franchise. .

Street Fighter 6 is scheduled for release in 2023 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. Matsumoto also confirmed rolling stone that “Not on the Sidelines” will be heard in-game.
