The latest Digital Wellbeing feature coming soon to Android 13 devices is the ability for Bedtime mode to dim your wallpaper.
About APK Insight: In this “APK Insight” article, we have decompiled the latest version of an app that Google uploaded to the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), we are able to see different lines of code in that hint at possible future features. Keep in mind that Google may or may not provide these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be flawed. We’ll try to activate the ones that are about to be completed, though, to show you what they’ll look like in the event that they ship. With that in mind, read on.
Bedtime Mode: Dark Theme and Dimming Wallpaper
On Android today, Google has delivered a full suite of features to help discourage nighttime use of your phone, or at the very least make nighttime use less straining on the eyes. With Bedtime mode, a big part of Google’s Digital Wellbeing suite, you can already use a schedule to grayscale your phone, turn off always-on display, and turn on Do Not Disturb.
In Android 13, we noticed that Google was working on the ability to dim your phone’s wallpaper. This capability was briefly made public in an Android code change we spotted a few months ago before it was removed, and our Dylan Roussel managed to enable it on an Android 13 Beta device. Below you will see some examples of the wallpaper being dimmed, ranging from 0% (off) to 100% (all black).
With the latest Digital Wellbeing beta update, we find our first hints of how Android 13’s wallpaper dimming effect will be used.
Specifically, wallpaper dimming will be a new optional feature in Digital Wellbeing’s Bedtime Mode as one of many ways to dim your screen at night to be easier on the eyes. At this time, we don’t know by what percentage your Android 13 wallpaper will be greyed out.
Bedtime screen options
Keep screen dark, dim wallpaper, and more
In another piece of in-app text likely to be displayed on devices not yet running Android 13, we learn that Bedtime mode will also be able to cause your device to “use a background.” dark”. Based on another piece of text, this seems to simply refer to enabling Android’s built-in dark mode.
Keep the screen dark, use a dark background, and more
Use black background
So far, while Android offers ways to schedule dark themes based on sunset and sunrise – and we’ve seen signs of scheduling based on bedtime in Android 13 – these new options for the bedtime mode don’t seem to be live yet on our devices running the Android 13 beta.
