More speculation, after a last minute leak, Bungie moved the official reveal time and finally unveiled Destiny 2 Season 17, a new experience in near total secrecy ahead of launch.
Today, with a new trailer, Bungie finally revealed the real name, Season of the Haunted, which leaked in some circles beforehand, but no one knew if it was legit or not. It was!
So why hide this name? Well it could be What is that haunted, which is Calus’ megaship Leviathan, which was at sunset when the pyramids arrived and Beyond Light struck, but has now returned this season in a “corrupted” form to commune with the sleeping pyramid on the moon . Calus has been working on some kind of scheme to serve the darkness, perhaps to try and become a disciple like Rhulk, and guess what? We have to stop it.
And we’ll do it using solar 3.0, the new subclass that’s been also kept hidden until this moment, though again, a few pretty steep clues pointed in that direction (for once, one of my predictions turned out to be unrealizable).
We have a small amount of information on seasonal content that will launch in just a few hours. The list:
Narrative: Leviathan is corrupted, overtaken by darkness. We will pass through old areas such as the now transformed Dogs/Throne rooms. The story centers on Crow, Zavala, and Caiatl dealing with old “Nightmare” demons that haunt them, as Eris was haunted by her dead fire crew. The plans say Crow faces Uldren, Caiatl faces Ghaul, and Zavala might face her deceased former love, I don’t recognize her otherwise. I have to confirm this, but the Leviathan seems like a real free space now, at least the parts that have been brought back for this season (and possibly permanently).
Containment of nightmares: We are back to fight Nightmares on the moon. These are not the old nightmare hunts, but battles that will take place somewhere inside the newly corrupted Leviathan. This activity is free for all players. I’m not sure about the number of players yet, but Bungie has mostly been doing 6-man stuff lately.
To break up: This is a sort of paid seasonal activity in which players navigate the belly of Leviathan to reveal the truth behind Calus’ plan and shatter the nightmares he controls. I don’t know if it could be like Season of the Splicer’s Expunge type missions.
Solar 3.0: No details here other than we can “ignite the flame of creativity” with the aspect and fragment system. Many have speculated that the new item is being kept secret because it’s related to the story, but no confirmation of that here yet.
Booty:In the press kit I saw images of moon themed armors which I assume are the base set for the season, wicked Ghost Rider looking armors which are probably ornaments of high level, and an Eververse solar set like the one from the void we got last time. The new loot is again quite evil and includes a new Scout Rifle, Rocket Launchers, Glaive, and Legendary Trace Rifle. But most pressingly, Bungie has brought back four classic Menagerie weapons, Calus MINI Tool, Beloved, Drang, and Austringer, presumably with new perks and an original trait. There’s also a new scythe for players to use, but I think it’s like a relic weapon for the activity, not actual loot.
Intruder: Bungie’s only Exotic reveal is the one they accidentally revealed a few weeks ago, the return of the Trespasser, Shiro-4’s Exotic arc sidearm from Destiny 1’s Rise of Iron. This is the Exotic Season Pass that all players will get.
The dungeon: No new information here other than his “secrets are well kept”. Given the events of the season, I’d be somewhat surprised if it wasn’t on Leviathan, but technically the dungeon isn’t seasonal content, it’s purchased separately through the Witch Queen deluxe edition or in a special two-dungeon pack for sale. So really it could be anywhere. I don’t believe the dungeon loot or screenshots are shown in the press kit.
It doesn’t look like things like Vaulted Raids or the Menagerie are returning as activities, but using some of those old areas, and having the ship back at all might open that door down the road.
Even with this last-minute reveal, it’s clear that Bungie is likely keeping a lot of secrets about this season. Was it all worth the mystery and hype? I mean, logging in to find Calus’ ship above the moon is a big deal, but we’ll see how the season plays out from here. I’m definitely excited, from what I’m hearing here.
