We’re in deeply unusual territory with the launch of Destiny 2 Season 17 next Tuesday. While we’ve heard of some sandbox changes and system overhauls, as we approach launch, we still don’t know the basics of the story, the characters involved, the name of the season, or even the new subclass element that is being redesigned. And we don’t know Why we don’t know that stuff.
But there is a common thread. While some fans are concerned that this is a bad sign, that Bungie might shut up because they have nothing to show, or that Destiny 2 Season 17 will be a disappointment, that’s just not what the employees are saying. from Bungie. While yes, you’ll usually plug in your own work, there’s a somewhat unusual level of internal hype for Season 17 beyond what we’ve seen in the past. Everything points to something big and/or unexpected happening next week.
I wanted to browse and compile some pre-hype from Bungie itself. Here is what I have:
I think the first time I noticed this was from Dr. Hazel Monforton, a relatively new senior narrative designer at Bungie who tweeted how Season 17 was shaping up a month ago, before we let’s know how secret it would be. until it is:
Last week, here’s Sandbox maintainer Kevin Yanes extolling the virtues of what could be the newest subclass update, if not the entire season:
And after that, he says he wants people to send him reaction videos, which seems like kind of a big discovery moment that we’re supposed to see. Maybe with the story, maybe with the subclass update, I’m not sure. But again, quite unusual!
Here is Senior Producer Rachel Levine who has worked on Opulence, Dawn, Arrivals, Chosen and Lost seasons in the past:
I’ve seen the DMG community manager say different things about how good this season is, this part of his reddit response to a post about stacking bounties and preparing for the new subclass stuck with me:
“The overwhelming majority of players are just excited for the season, and are going to lose their minds when all the goodies (paid season, free subclass update) are revealed.
Listen, I really like Destiny, but really, really curious what players will be “losing their minds about” when the seasonal content and subclass update is revealed.
And this is Joe Blackburn, Destiny 2 Game Director
Okay, maybe this one is underselling it a bit.
But yeah, I feel like something bigger or more important than usual is coming up. Whether it’s a wild subclass update, huge in-universe plot twists, or high-profile content, I have no idea, but I’m dying to know and this damn secret really works on me I guess. See you Tuesday, and we’ll see what all the hype and mystery is about.
